Bo Thompson, an energetic young man who was loved by all, departed this
life on August 25, 2005. To honor his memory, the D. H. Conley Cross
Country Team annually hosts the BO RUN Cross Country
Invitational at Boyd Lee Park. Runners from area high schools
come together and celebrate the life of this young man and the sport of
running.
Bo, at the time of his untimely death, was a junior at D. H. Conley
High School. He was the ultimate student athletic, whose commitment and
dedication was admired by both his peers and teachers. He met life with
vigor and never met a stranger. Bo had the ability to make anyone feel
welcome and at home. When he walked into a room he had a presence that
captured your attention and a smile that warmed your heart.
At D. H. Conley, Bo Thompson was a great writer, student,
athlete and friend to many. He was an active member in Student Athletes
for Sports Integrity (SASI), he challenged his friends to always be true
to themselves and others. As a sophomore, he received the first SASI
sportsmanship award given at D.H. Conley High School for his commitment
to always hold the team above himself and always being there for others.
His parents had instilled in him the importance of making every moment
count, and Bo spent many hours volunteering his time at school, in his
church, and in his community. He never backed away from his
commitments or ran from a challenge.
Bo Thompson played baseball, ran cross country, and worked as
the sports editor for the school newspaper at D. H. Conley. He was a
great student, a caring teammate, a true friend, and a role model for
many. He never asked to be a role model but he was. He knew that God
had given him a gift of being an influence on others and he chose to use
that gift in great ways. Bo Thompson had written this message in his
baseball cap “People may doubt what you say, but they will always
believe what you do.” To him this was much more than just a nice
saying; it was a way to live his life.
-Special thanks to Coleman Bailey for sharing with us the story of Bo Thompson. The former XC coach at DH Conley, Coleman was Bo's coach, and has been instrumental over the years at keeping Bo's memory alive through efforts like the Bo Run.
